Case study, Studio & retail

A local studio site where the portfolio does the selling.

Tattoo Creations is an appointment-only studio in Sinfin, Derby, where Kev Oakton works in colour and black and grey. The site is built so the work is seen first and found locally.

The brief

The brief.

Choosing a tattoo artist is a portfolio decision. Clients look at healed work in the style they want, decide whether this artist can do it, and only then think about booking. Anything that delays the work being seen is friction. At the same time this is a strictly local business, and almost all of its demand comes through search for Derby and Derbyshire.

The site needed to put the portfolio front and centre, name the styles the studio actually works in so the right clients recognise themselves, and hold a strong enough local search footprint to be found across the area.

Scope

What we built.

  1. 01

    Portfolio-first design

Gallery and recent work given the weight on the page, with the artwork sized and delivered to be looked at properly.

  2. 02

    Named styles and specialisms

Realism, illustrative and fine line work, plus cover-ups, named explicitly so clients searching for a style find a match.

  3. 03

    Artist profile

Kev Oakton's work and approach presented directly, since in this trade the artist is the brand.

  4. 04

    Local search structure

Derby and Derbyshire coverage built into the page structure and markup, with directions and map routing to the Sinfin studio.

  5. 05

    Process and aftercare

How the studio works and how aftercare is handled, set out so first-time clients know what to expect.

  6. 06

    Appointment-only enquiry

An enquiry route matched to how the studio actually runs, rather than a booking widget that would misrepresent it.

Decisions

Build decisions.

  1. 01

    Images treated as the product

Tattoo work is judged on detail, so the imagery is sized and delivered to hold up under scrutiny without slowing the page down.

  2. 02

    Styles named, not implied

Clients search by style. Naming realism, fine line and cover-up work makes the studio findable to the people it suits.

  3. 03

    Enquiry, not instant booking

The studio is appointment-only and every piece is scoped in conversation. The site reflects that rather than promising a calendar slot it cannot honour.
